Llandaff v Old Pens (23rd Jan 2011) |
A rearranged fixture saw the Under 10s playing their Llandaff RFC counterparts. In total contrast to the previous game against St Albans, the "young" Old Penarthians came out firing, showing aggression in the tackle, excellent awareness of the players around them, good support play and accurate passing. As a result, within a few minutes of the start of the game Kobi Clarke went bursting over the Llandaff line for an excellent try. More was to come from the Old Pens. A flowing movement showing good support play and passing from Dylan Stanger and Kobi Clarke led to Ethan Barry outrunning the home defense for a try. This seemed to spur the Llandaff players into action with three quick scores before the end of the first half. If not for the resolute defense of George Cowley and Ethan Mills, this try count could have been higher.
The second half saw the home side continue the good attacking play they displayed in the first half and were rewarded with two quick tries just after the restart. The Old Pens appeared to lose their defensive shape during this period but after some touchline coaching, things were put right. The rest of the second half saw an even contest between two well matched sides, both showing excellent attacking and defensive skills. A highlight during this period was the elusive running of Cian Williams McCarthy which helped the Old Pens match their opposition. A further try by Llandaff towards the end of the game was quickly answered by the Old Pens. A strong run on the left side of the field by Ellis Smith almost outpaced the defense but he was tackled just short of the line. Quick ball from the resulting ruck led to George Cowley running through the disorganised Llandaff defense for the final score of the game.
This was an excellent performance from the U10s who put 110% effort into the game. As they were walking off the pitch all the boys received deserved applause from the watching parents, coaches and assistant coaches. No individual stood out due to such a fantastic team effort, so the man of the match award was given to all the team. Under 10s Squad: Ethan Barry, Ethan Mills, Jamie McGillivray, Jack Garrett, George Cowley, Joe Rees, Harrison Jalil, Henry Kynaston, Adam Hall, Calan Cross, Cian Williams McCarthy, Joe Hitches, Kobi Clarke, Rhys Newman, Ellis Smith, Dan Hicks and Dylan Stanger.

Sully Sports v Old Pens (14th Nov 2010) |
The coaches all thought that the boys showed terrific improvement on previous weeks and a feature of their game was their strong tackling....obviously the tackling games and practise in training had helped. All the U10s played well with Ethan B showed good rucking skills on more than one occasion. Strong tacklers included Cian W-M, George C, and Jack G. Good support play was just one aspect demonstrated by Henry K, Jamie M, and Jo R and they were backed up by the forward skills of Adam H and Harrison J. Without all these players contributing their parts the strong runs of Ellis S and Kobi C would not have been possible. Mention should be made of the tries scored by Ellis S, Ethan B, Kobi C and George C. This weeks "Player of the Week" showed not only good evasion and handling skills, but tackled everything that moved. Congratulations to Ethan M, on this week being OPRFC U10s player of the week. Additional thanks to Henry K., who was Captain of the team. The "Old Pens" would also like to thank Sully Sports RFC for their kind hospitality and a game well played in a friendly and competitive manner. |

Player of the week - Old Pens v Glamorgan Wanderers and CIACS |
This week we awarded a small trophy (to be kept for one week) to the player we thought listened to what the coaches and referee said, tackled, ran and passed well. We thought that all the boys played well after an initial lack of concentration in both games. After the games, the coaches decided that this weeks "Player of the Week" was Ellis S. Congratulations to Ellis, keep up the good work. Thanks also to George C., who was Captain of the team against Glamorgan Wanderers and CIACS. We would also to thank both Dylan S, who was captain in our first fixture against Barry, and Jack G, our Captain against the Old Illtydians. |
