Message from Gerard - Cardiff Blues v Glasgow

On behalf of the Coaches, may I say how very proud of the boys we were tonight. It was an honour and a pleasure to represent the Old Penarthians Rugby Club with them.

Special mention to the boys who volunteered to be Flag Bearers (Elliott, Gethin D, Mackenzie, Max L, Rhys, Max S & Kian). They were magnificent and got on the telly!! Next time you'll start the game lads.

Superb performance of TAG rugby at half time against Pontyclun, winning 5-3 with some brilliant running rugby. Try scorers on the Arms Park; Gethin O'C (2), Jacob, Oli & Tommy.

Old Pens U11s play for the Vale in the DC Thomas Cup Final

Old pens U11s minis, Ellis smith and Daniel hicks played for the Vale of Glamorgan U11s Schools side in the DC Thomas Cup Final, at the Millennium Stadium.

The Vale side played against Pontypool schools on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

During the game, the crowd were shouting”Come on vale”.

The game was so intense. The tries were amazing, the speed, the agility and the power of the tackles was a pleasure to watch.

After a titanic battle, the Vale won the game 21-19.

Congratulations to Dan Hicks and Ellis Smith who each received a winner’s medal.

Old Pens Under 11s in final trial for Vale of Glamorgan Schools

The club is very proud of all the boys who attended the final trial for the Vale of Glamorgan Schools Under 11s. Congratulation to you all - Dylan Stanger, Jay Morse, George Cowley, Dan Hicks and Ellis Smith.

With over 40 boys attending the final trial, competition for the squad places was fierce. We wish all our players taking part would have made the final squad. However two boys appeared to fit into what the Vale Coaches wanted for their squad. The Club wish to send their congratulations to Dan Hicks and Ellis Smith on becoming the first players from the Old Pens Mini's to attain representative honours.

To the boys who didn't make the final squad, we say well done for getting to the final trial. You shouldn't be disheartened, remember that you have proved that you are good enough to get this far. A little extra work over this season should help you for next years trial.

Parent v Children Tag Rugby and Christmas Party

Last Sunday saw the inaugural 8-a-side Tag Rugby Christmas games between the Old Pens U10 and U8s mini rugby teams and their parents. The bumper crowd at Cwrt y Vil Playing Fields witnessed a feast of "barbarian style rugby" from both age groups.

The first game between the U10s and their parents saw the up and coming stars of the Old Pens outscore their elderly counterparts by five tries to one. As is traditional at Christmas, the game had a pantomime villain in the shape of Jon B. After repeated infringements, back chat and despite numerous warnings, the experienced and totally unbiased referee had no alternative but to send him off. He walked off the pitch to a chorus of boos from the watching supporters. Within 3 minutes the parents lost another player, Jon's eldest son, Simon, who "voiced" his opinion to the referee once too often. Down to five men (and one woman) the parents struggled to contain the U10s , whose sheer number advantage began to tell - by this time they had 14 players on the field. The final try for the U10s was scored by Ethan B, who without his father and brother illegally containing his attacking flair, was able to weave his way through the defense of the parents for an excellent touchdown.

The second game between the parents and the U8s was played in a similar spirit, with all of the U8s squad members taking part. The younger players gave a masterclass in passing and easily outscored the parents, many of who were left "stuck in the mud" by the skills of their junior opponents. Special thanks must be given to the guest referee for this game, Mr. James Evans, captain of the Old Penarthians 1st XV.

After the games, the club provided a party for the children, with the usual spread of Christmas fare, and inevitable Slade Christmas music.  During the party, the sponsor of the U10s, Mr. Gary Curtis of GC Insulation was introduced to the players and officially presented the club with the playing shirts.

party1

At this break in festivities, the player of the U10s match was awarded for the first time to two players, Helen C, from the U10s parents team, and her son Calan. Congratulations to them both on playing the game in the spirit it was meant to.

Party2

The club would like to thank all the parents for contributing to a great day, not only for any food but also from their support. Special mention goes to Sue Stout for providing all the sandwiches, Marilyn Morgan and her bar staff for providing the much needed refreshments, and the coaches who organised the day.

Old Pens at the Cardiff Blues

The Cardiff Blues held their fourth Regional Clubs Day on Sunday 21st Nov 2010. It is a day where the Cardiff Blues celebrate rugby in the Blues region. All 82 clubs in the region were invited to the Ulster match to take part in the festivities. As a gesture of thanks to the clubs in the region who have supported the Blues over the years, tickets were made available to players from the mini and junior sections of each club

The Old Penarthians took part for the first time, with a number of the U8s and U10s attending. During the half time interval there was a regional clubs parade around the outside of the pitch, the Old Pens being led around by Danielle Lane, Assistant Coach with the U8s.

Our "special" U12 representative, Morgan Crimp, took part in the half time sprint competition between the clubs who attended. Despite a performance reminiscent of Torvill and Dean (he was the only competitor not wearing studded boots), he came a credible 5th in his heat.

OPRFC would like to thank the Cardiff Blues for the afternoon of entertainment, although the result of the game was not what we wanted. All the boys who took part in the Regional Clubs Parade and the Sprint Competition thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
