Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd 2nd XV v Old Penarthians 2nd XV (CADRU League)

The second XV had a car ride to Cardiff and a long walk to the changing rooms at Llandaff Fields to play Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd.  The team were looking for a small amount of revenge for their defeat in the opening friendly game of the season but unfortunately came up short for the second time.  This time the margin of defeat in their league fixture was 55 points to 20.

The half time score of 24 points to 20 did however show the endeavour in the team and tries from John Vaughan, Mark ‘Crevvie’ Curtis with two conversions and a penalty from Steve Cross (nee Thomas) meant that the half time team talk had some hope.  However the fact that Clwb Rygbi had the full complement of substitutes together with a youthfulness that was not evident in blue and gold shirts meant the second half was somewhat one-sided.  Mark Smart, Tom Sidford and Steve Cross battled hard but it didn’t help that Matthew Reid was taken to hospital after 5 minutes with a dislocated finger that he would not allow Alex Lewis to put back into place.  However despite all that, everyone agreed that the biggest contributory factor to the defeat was the long walk to the pitch in the hot sunshine.
