Match Report - 17th Sept. 2011

Old Penarthians 2nd XV 17 v Pontyclun 2nd XV 43 (CADRU League)

At Cwrt-y-vil on the same afternoon the 2nd XV played host to Pontyclun with what looked to be a very experienced team boasting many first XV ‘caps’ and two previous captains of the club.  Whilst most of their better days may now be behind them all the experience gained over many campaigns was to the fore at the start of the game and the team took a lead of 12 points to nil with tries from David Owen and Alex Lewis.  One of which was converted by Mark Bow.  Unfortunately, the age in the legs caught up with them and that lead was turned into a 43 points to 12 deficit with 5 minutes to play.

To the team’s credit they rallied at the death and scored the last try of the game through Huw Williams, which was something of a surprise as it was the only ball he caught during the afternoon.  Huw will now be taking lessons from the club’s Under 10s mini rugby team whom he normally coaches on a Sunday morning.  This unconverted try made the final score 43 points to 17.  Mark Bow was an effective scrum half whilst Chris Dacey should probably not consider a new career as an outside half, unless he learns how to pass.  The forwards competed well with Paul Kemp and Ian Buckley never giving up and there was a debut at senior rugby for Tom Sidford, eventually following in the footsteps of Penarth RFC lock forward Steve.  However it was Sean Leach, returning from a long spell out of the game with injury, who was the dynamo that could not stop tackling
